David Taylor is an award-winning landscape and travel photographer, born and raised in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear. His work has taken him all over the world, but away from his photographic career David lives on an exposed hill, overlooking the market town of Hexham in Northumberland, UK.

The SLIGHTLY expanded guide

As stated in my title, I found this book only marginally better than the manual. I actually read the whole thing, as opposed to keeping it for reference, as I really wanted to know my A550. When it was done, I still didn't feel as though I knew my camera very well. I will be making some comparisons to the much more expensive but *infinitely more superior* book by Gary L. Friedman. The Complete Guide to Sony's Alpha 500 & 550 DSLR (B&W Edition) Yes, I would take Friedman's book in B&W for that price before I'd purchase this one again.
Many times the author of this "expanded guide" explains how to access a certain function, but doesn't explain why you would want to use that function. Explanations aren't usually very in depth. Space is wasted on such compelling information as "The power switch surrounds the shutter button. Switched off, the camera is entirely inactive. Switched on, the camera will operate normally." Wow. Didn't know that. In addition, you get the impression that he works for Sony, because he doesn't criticize even things that deserve criticism (something Friedman isn't afraid to do).
Taylor allots all of one small page (this book is small) to both DRO and HDR functions. This is woefully inadequate! Friedman introduces DRO early in his book, and then covers it in detail when pertinent later, over the course of 6 pages, not counting the two pages that illustrate in both words and images the differences between DRO and HDR. He then covers HDR in 5 separate pages, complete with illustrative examples. So in total, 14 pages devoted to those two functions, compared to one page by Taylor. This is just one of many, many examples. I will be writing a review of Friedman's book soon.
Do yourself a favor. You just spent $600+ on a great camera. Spend another $20 (pdf version) to $50 (B&W hard copy) on Friedman's wonderful book that will teach you everything and more about your new toy. You won't be sorry you did.
