Acting: Walking the Tightrope of an Illusion - Zen Lessons for Actors in Life and Onstage, by Michael Beckett

Michael Beckett, renowned acting teacher of New York City's HB Studio, investigates the many mysteries of the noble art of acting. Compiled from live recorded transcripts from his invitational experimental master class, the actor's craft is studied through deep inquiry into the actor's psyche. Emotional blocks, insecurities and universal concerns of the beginner and advanced actor are observed with the intent to unravel the entanglement of mind itself. Zen stories and esoteric principles are explored as life lessons to shed light on the actor’s understanding of human nature.

Universal concerns of the actor's process are explored from a perspective that goes far beyond technique. Conversations cover such topics as the joy of being confused, working from emptiness, playing the action not the concept, turning yourself on, loving the character as yourself, and dealing with self-consciousness and performance jitters. For example:

Student: "What do you mean the actor has to have an empty mind?"

Teacher: "There are two ways to listen. And in acting, one of the ways is listening to the person and to the inner conversation one is having in relation to the expectation or condition one is setting up for that person. Another way of listening is coming to it with nothing, with no expectation or condition. It's a very different kind of listening – the way you listen to a great piece of music, or the way you listen to the wind in the trees. The actor wants to listen in relation to a condition that he sets up, an expectation."

***

Teacher: Know yourself. Make mistakes. Run risks. Any place where you're challenged, even threatened--it's good. And if you get pissed off and upset, that's a good sign. it means something's getting to you. Watch--usually when you're being "gotten to," there's a lot of negativity that starts surfacing because you start to defend your position finding reasons to stay protected. And it's very easy to find justifications. But when you don't go that way--when you surrender to all of it and don't defend yourself, you can learn something about yourself. Why am I pissed off? Why am I angry? it's got nothing to do with what's going on out there, it must have something to do with me.

Beautiful life views as certain principles of acting
By Jodi
Mr Beckett is one of the best and subtle scene study instructors I've met. He feels the essence, emotions and subtext from the first second he sees a scene. He relies heavily on psychological side, i.e. the roots of characters' behavior while offers to play lightly, conversationally, as kids do when they play their games. Among his many advises:

- Take time to arrive to a moment, so it would not seem as a well prepared piece.
- Connect to what and why your character wants to say, why does she say that? Go deep.
- Connect scene with personal experience and stay there.
- Slowly (when connected) sort out what is important to make the accent.
- Acting should be grounded, nailed.
- Act like a kid. Children are innocent and deliver true emotions and feelings. It will radiate truth.
- It's always personal, always about yourself.
- You think a woman is beautiful because there is one inside of you who resonates to that. Otherwise, you would not think so, you even would not notice the girl.
- Don't force muscles. Respond to a moment. And a moment should be always new. It keeps you young, at least.

A door to the inner, spiritual dimensions of acting.
By estelle47
If, like me, you fell in love with acting because you discovered it was what you wanted to be when you grew up (or maybe some of you have always known)... what you wanted to be as a grown-up without having to give up the spontaneity and honesty and immediacy of being a child... then you will find much that resonates in this book. The title is perfect. For me, "walking the tightrope of an illusion" captures that wonderful and inexpressible thing that happens when you're in the "zone" and the lines and the actions of your character simply spill out without any hindrance or hesitation. Like running down a rocky hill, totally in the moment and life-and-death alert, absolutely exhilarating. Without thinking or planning or regretting or looking ahead -- that's the Zen part. And the book should be read as a Zen book. Don't expect ABC / 1-2-3 cause-and-effect techniques, here. There are better books for that. This book is for the space between the lines, where the inexpressible magic happens.

Every actor should read this
By Hayley
This is not a "how-to" act e-book. It is anything but an instructional text; it contains not one acting exercise or rule of thumb. But reading it can help one become a more truthful, compelling actor.

Actually "reading" is not quite the correct action. One inhales this book.
