Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics is one of the major theological works of the 20th century. The Swiss-German theologian Karl Barth (1886-1968) was the most original and significant Reformed theologian of the twentieth century. Barth began the Church Dogmatics in 1932 and continued working on its thirteen volumes until the end of his life. Barth's writings continue to guide and instruct the preaching and teaching of pastors and academics worldwide.
The English translation was prepared by a team of scholars and edited by G. W. Bromiley and T. F. Torrance and published from 1936. A team of scholars at Princeton Theological Seminary have now provided the translation of Greek, Latin, Hebrew and French passages into English. The original is presented alongside the English translation. This makes the work more reader friendly and accessible to the growing number of students who do not have a working knowledge of the ancient languages. This new edition with translations is now available for the first time in individual volumes.

Karl Barth was described by Pope Pius XII as the most important theologian since Thomas Aquinas, the Swiss Pastor and Theologian, and Barth continues to be a major influence on students, scholars and preachers. Having taken over 30 years to write, the Church Dogmatics is regarded as one of the most important theological works of all time, and represents the pinnacle of Barth's achievements as a theologian.

VOLUME 23: BARTH’S EXCELLENT “THEOLOGY-OF-HOPE” VOLUME
This section of the “Church Dogmatics” is where Jurgen Moltmann concentrated when becoming Barth’s successor, and when formulating his 1965 “THEOLOGY OF HOPE”. It is a “center-piece” of the entire “Dogmatics”. Make sure you get this volume. The volume addresses justification, community, and faith; but, it radically addresses “promise and hope” as foundational categories for the Christian faith. As usual, I recommend small portions at a time, so the richness of Barth’s content is not missed. I found the following group of short lessons:
1. Justification-judgement-teleology pp. 1-30
2. Riddle of history-unification-man of tomorrow pp. 30-50
3. Pardon-Creatio ex Nihilo-righteousness pp. 50-70
4. Promissio-forgiveness-lively hope pp. 77-94
5. Confession-reckoned-obedience pp. 94-116
6. Solus christus-justifying faith-history pp. 116-130
7. Henosis-apodeixis-ekklesia kuriake pp. 130-150
8. Unam-sanctum-catholicam ecclesiam pp. 150-200
9. Apostolic-biblical-advent authority pp. 201-229
10. Relationship-orientation-correspondence pp. 230-268
As I said, everything in this volume is directed toward promise and hope in the Christ-Event. And it was powerfully appropriated by Jurgen Moltmann; who made Barth popular in the United States in 1967. It is an excellent chance to study the original Barth documentation that addresses this eschatological-faith. NOTHING BUT PRAISE HERE: 5 BIG STARS

Landmark Achievement

Karl Barth is arguably the most important theologian in the past centuries. Church Dogmatics, his magnum opus, is the core of Barth's life work. The past decade has witnessed tremendous growth in Barthian studies. Although Church Dogmatics has been available in English for years, there are long untranslated quotations in Latin, Greek and German that are essential for understanding Barth's thought.
The new Study Edition of Church Dogmatics contains English translations of these passages for those of us who are not fluent in the original languages. The original page numbering is preserved for ease and consistency of reference.
This 33 volume project will open Barth's magisterial thinking to new generations of scholars. It is a landmark achievement.

Another great book by Karl Barth.
His whole series is outstanding! It does take me a while to read, but I am becoming more familiar with this style and his series is becoming easier to read with each volume!
