A fascinating and fun look at the "Heart of Darkness."

I have long kept in my memory statistics such as the fact that the the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648) managed to kill off 25% of the German population. Or there is my personal favorite - during the War of the Triple Alliance, the Paraguayan dictator Francisco Solano Lopez improbably and imprudently led Paraguay in to a war against Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, which resulted in the deaths of something like 90% of the mature Paraguayan male population.

These statistics are simply imponderable. What was it like to live after the cataclysm of the Thirty Years War? How did Paraguay manage to continue as a nation after the debacle of the War of the Triple Alliance? How did these "democides" happen?

The Great Big Book of Horrible Things collects and ranks the Thirty Years War (Rank: 17) and the War of the Triple Alliance (Rank: 79) with ninety-eight other mind-boggling instances of man's inhumanity to man, and provides a brief synopsis of their causes, course and results, all done in a breezy and humorous approach to the all-too serious subject matter. This approach is not a flaw of the book. All but five or six of the wars are long-forgotten, and the fact that so many can die for what appear to be transient and ephemeral causes is a cautionary instruction for the modern age. Moreover, the effect that these statistics and the stories behind them have - particularly the ones removed from modernity - have on me is "Gosh!Wow!" as in "Gosh! Wow!" can you believe that Genghis Khan (Rank: 2) managed to kill 40 million human beings with nothing more than muscle powered weapons?!?!?

Each of the entries gets a fairly short write up that provides background, players, setting, course and effects of the particular piece of human tragedy being reviewed. The book covers a period from the Second Persian War (Rank: 96), circa 480 - 479, to the Second Congo War (Rank: 27) that ran from 1998 to 2002. The author Matthew White surveys the entire world, which results in entries from the Goguryeo-Sui Wars (Rank: 67) between Korea and China, crica 598 to 612 A.D., to the Bahmani-Vijayanagara Wather (Rank: 70) between Muslims and Hindus, circa 1366, in Indian, to the "Heart of Darkness" which was King Leopold I of Belgium's Congo Free State (Rank:14), circa 1865 - 1908. The result is a book that is easy to dip into to read whatever the reader is interested in, but then pulls the reader into reading "just another" selection, then another selection, as the reader is confronted by well-known and unknown mind-boggling, "Gosh! Wow!" histories of events whose passions have either died completely or are in the process of dying out.

The author has a couple of nice appendices where he crunches some numbers for determining who and what are the greatest killers. Although my senses was that he had a secularist bias, he was encouragingly even-handed in analyzing both the cliche that religion causes war and the contribution that Communism has made to mass-killing in the 20th Century. For my part, I was surprised by the number of Chinese rebellions that were inspired by a form of "Christianity," to wit, two: the Fang La Rebellion (Rank: 37) of 1120 - 1122 was led by "Vegetarian Demon Worshippers," i.e., Manichaeans, and the Taiping Rebellion (Rank: 6) of 1850 - 1864 was led by a person who fancied himself to be the "younger brother of Jesus Christ." Granted that there are a lot of Chinese rebellions that did not need to be ignited by a a Christian heresy, one has to marvel - Gosh! Wow! - about the fact that any of them - let alone two - were ignited by such an alien influence, as Christianity is to China, and ponder what effect that may have had on the antipathy of Communist China in the 20th Century to Christian missionaries. (Admittedly there are other reasons for Communists to suppress Christianity, but the virtue of a book like this one is that it allows such patterns to become apparent because of the breadth of its coverage.)

This is a great book to leave on the night stand or coffee table for those occasions when the reader has a few minutes to get lost in the the great ethnic cleansing of the Sino-Dzungar War (Rank: 67), circa 1755-1757, when China eliminated the Dzungar nation by eliminating something on the order of 600,000 Dzungars in an atrocity that has essentially been forgotten.

Like a train wrech, you just can't look away

I bought this book with some hesitation. Who wants to read about a billion deaths of human beings brought on by mass homicide? It almost says something about people who would find such a topic interesting. But, I am a student of history and after reading the table of contents, I thought it could give me a few insights I might not have previously heard of. I was delightfully correct. Just about every page I found new facts and insights on historical figures, some of which I had never heard of. And, as a huge plus, Matthew white has a charming writing style that somehow seems to make the study of such gruesome subject matter easy to read all without trivializing the human tragedy of it all. What monsters we humans can be? We are just ghastly creatures and particularly beastly toward our own kind. I came away from the book a bit ashamed I am of the same species as such creeps as "Genghis" Kahn and Napoleon Bonaparte, Mao Tse Tung and Joseph Stalin. I could find no refuge in my European ancestry, either; From famous British monsters who starved millions of Indian Hindus to death deliberately or Spanish conquistadores who systematically murdered and enslaved millions of North American indigenous people. My nationality was no help either as American slave masters and traders helped butcher millions more helpless Africans and slaughter more American natives. It is ghastly, and like any unfolding human disaster you just can't look away.

I also developed a rather intense sick feeling knowing human beings have changed very little over the last ten thousand years. We immodestly pat ourselves on the back as rising to unheard of levels of civilization and enlightened social intercourse. But, whites history is unapologetically inclusive of recent acts of unspeakable barbarity, such as WWII, the senseless monstrosities from the Korean peninsula, and human induced horrors from Central Africa, and other acts of inhuman butchery many of which have happened in this century! White tries to find some pattern to it all in his closing chapters and yet, the reader has to come to the conclusion, there is nothing that can be directly blamed for it except gross human stupidity and madness of mob mentality. We really are a unique species in more way than just our so-called high intelligence. We are crafty apes, with murder in our black hearts. We are ruthless and selfish and pitiless. We are not just capable of grand individual sweeps of specie-cide, we seem to gladly and massively follow the inhuman and murderous orders of any tyrant willing to toss us a few crumbs of moldy bread to us so such evil creatures can magnify their well thought out horrors a million fold. It is fascinating and disgusting, horrible and informative, sickening and intriguing to learn this dark side to our own inner psyche. The word "humanity" takes on an entirely different shade after reading this well written and intensely informative book.

Historically, Life Has No Value …

ATROCITIES: THE 100 DEADLIEST EPISODES IN HUMAN HISTORY provides a blunt view at mankind’s destructive ways from the Second Persian War (480 BC) to the Second Congo War (2002). Between these two bookends are a multitude of wars, genocides, rebellions, crusades, revolts and general acts/missions of deadly cruelty that consumed hundreds of millions of lives. As astonishing as the sheer number of deaths are, even more astonishing is that author Matthew White only details and ranks (by death toll) the 100 deadliest events. What makes ATROCITIES such a worthy reference is not only the abundance of details, but the presentation of the material along with White’s mordant narration.

Organized in a chronological manner, each “episode” (war, genocide, etc.) is presented as a chapter. Each chapter includes a summary header that encapsulates the episode by including: death toll, participants, time frame, location, general reasoning behind episode, who or what’s to blame and the episode’s rank on the list of 100. Following the header, White delves into the dirty details of the event in a succinct manner that is rich with details. His witty summaries of each episode include a degree of sarcasm that somehow manages to blend the grave subject manner with a bit of humor. The humor relates mostly to how mankind’s stupidity often leads to mass death … many of the episodes presents will have readers shaking their heads. White makes the depressing topic rather enjoyable to read. There are no illustrations/pictures (other than the cover) and only a handful of maps in the book, but the text renders such visual aids unnecessary. The appendices at the end of the book provide the rationale behind the rankings, additional summarized data and the sources used to create the book.

Overall, ATROCITIES is a terrific and useful reference that brings to light many lesser-known historical events from all over the world. There were quite a few episodes that I had never heard of, especially in Africa. I have always enjoyed almanacs, older versions of the Guinness Book of World records and The Book of Lists, so this book really hit the mark with me.

Great Little Book By Maxwell

"How Successful People Think" by John Maxwell is a great little book and a timely read, particularly in a day where media and others encourage us to follow our feelings almost to the exclusion of thinking.

The book covers thinking in several areas:

1. Focused thinking.
2. Creative thinking.
3. Realistic thinking.
4. Strategic thinking.
5. Possibility thinking.
6. Reflective thinking.
7. Question Popular Thinking.
8. Shared thinking.
9. Unselfish thinking (get outside yourself!).
10. Bottom-Line thinking.

Each chapter is around 10 pages and usually contains the following that applies to the area of thinking being discussed:

1. Sayings by famous people.
2. Benefits of the particular type of thinking.
3. Principles to apply to improve your thinking in that area.

This is not one of those "touchy-feely" books designed to make you feel good about yourself. If that is what you are looking for, then do not bother to read.

Instead, if you want to improve your thinking in any of several areas, then this book is for you. The narrative flows freely and contains great information to inspire and challenge you.

Read, enjoy, and be challenged. Highly recommended!

You must out think your competition

In today's competitive global marketplace, to win we must outwit, out maneuver and out think the competition. The world changes daily and new thinking is critical to success in both one's personal and professional life. Dr. Maxwell reminds us of a statement made by Albert Einstein, "Thinking is hard work; that's why so few do it."

What Dr. Maxwell does is show us how to make successful critical thinking a daily habit. That, of course, isn't going to happen just by reading this book. It is going to happen because one uses this book daily as a "hand book." It is the right size to easily keep with you in your computer case, keep on your desk and to grab and thumb through revisiting ideas and points on a consistent basis.

I bought a copy for every member of my team. We have been going over a chapter a week in our sales meetings. I recommend it for all sales professionals, managers, entrepreneurs...anyone who wants to up their game!

This book is a quick read, but a life changer!

John C. Maxwell's book titled How Successful People Think Workbook has altered my life path for the better, opened up new possibilities for me, and provided new ways to organize thought processes--all after a 1 � day read of the entire book's content!

Maxwell, himself a sincere individual who once served as a pastor, provides and describes eleven delightful categories of thinkers: Big-Picture Thinker, Focused Thinker, Creative Thinker, Realistic Thinker, Strategic Thinker, Possibility Thinker, Reflective Thinker, Unpopular Thinking (in a good way), Shared Thinker, Unselfish Thinker, and Bottom-Line Thinker. His objective is to encourage the reader to develop all eleven areas of thinking to the reader's advantage.

Near the beginning of the book, Maxwell introduces a survey which helps to identify in what type of thinking the reader is either strong or weak. From there, each chapter delves into one particular area of thinking. The structure of the book is further broken down into a story or anecdote to illustrate the type of thinking, along with questions pertaining to the particular mode of thinking, ideas on how to become more like that particular thinker, the nature of that type of thinking, and so forth.

One of the more delightful characteristics of the book is how everything ties in nicely together. For instance, Maxwell posits that, although certain types of thinking may seem contradictory, such as Creative versus Realistic thinking, they can work well in tandem at different stages.

It should be stated that what I personally gained from spending a day and a half reading the entirety of the book is phenomenal. For instance, the Creative Thinker section helped me to realize how creativity should be nurtured without limitations, without boundaries, and without skeptics or naysayers. Combining this type of thinking with Bottom-Line thinking and Strategic thinking, I have decided to spend time each day organizing thoughts and ideas through mind mapping, utilizing creative sketches for each topic, and having each node of the mind map connect to the bottom-line.

Additionally, the chapter on Possibility thinking has led me to take up an entirely new area of study for the next year--an additional creative hobby-- in order to branch out on my breadth of experience and gain new insights.

I particularly loved Maxwell's chapter on Unpopular Thinking and how aiming for popularity limits all of the potential within each area of thinking. More than that, I deeply respected the emphasis on both Unselfish and Reflective thinking, and how serving others is paramount to meaning in life.

This was a book that a professor in ESP studies introduced to our class on the topic. It is a quick read that gives an overview of several very specific ESP contexts. These are truncated case studies, essentially, and while each do not give in-depth details of the course content in each case study, it does give the reader and over-arching structure of ESP course construction and needs analysis for both the novice researcher and educator, alike. Overall, it's a good resource with out-of-the-ordinary samples which makes it go from a good resource to a great one.

About the Author
Jeffrey Wolf Green has been called the founder of Evolutionary Astrology, and rightly so. He began to lecture on Evolutionary Astrology in 1977, and wrote this first book called Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey Of The Soul in 1985. He has lectured all around the world, and this book has been translated in eight languages. The Evolutionary Astrology that he taught is a pioneering work that allows for a complete understanding of the Souls evolutionary journey from life to life. He established schools in Chile, Israel, England, Holland, Canada, America, and Germany. He also created a video correspondence course in 1994, and wrote the second volume to this work in 1996 called Pluto: The Soul's Evolutionary Journey Through Relationships. His daughter, Deva Green, also edited a book of his unpublished lectures called The Evolutionary Journey Of The Soul: Essays in Evolutionary Astrology in 2011.

About the Author
Jacob Milgrom is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. The author of five scholarly books and more than two hundred articles, he was named a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, a fellow of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem, and a senior fellow of the Albright Institute of Archaeological Research. Now retired, he and his wife, Jo, live in Jerusalem.

Best Single Commentary I Have Ever Studied

I regard this commentary as the best one I have ever used in studying through a Bible book. I chose to read it along with both the Hebrew and Septuagint text of Leviticus. I frequently complain of commentaries that while they are good in one area they are often not so good in others. Of course, if they were good in all areas, then they would be too large.

In this case, Milgrom covers everything from source and redaction criticism, through both Jewish and Christian commentary through the centuries, to detailed original analysis. He doesn't neglect relating the text to theology either. Of course, that leaves the one complaint--that at three volumes, this commentary is too large.

Because of the combined depth and breadth, I found studying Leviticus with this commentary to be an exciting spiritual journey as well as an intellectually stimulating one. Dr. Milgrom covers numerous vexing problems in the text in great detail. He generally explains opposing positions so well that you can start arguing for them. In fact, while you read his summary of the evidence in favor of opposing positions you might even forget that they are not actually HIS positions.

Extensive indexing and references makes the three volume set (this one, Leviticus 17-22 (The Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries), and Leviticus 23-27 (The Anchor Yale Bible Commentaries)) extremely valuable for reference as well as extended study.

One of the key topics in the book is the dating of Pentateuchal sources. While Dr. Milgrom takes a fairly traditional approach to the number and geographical distribution of sources, he tends to date some of them in a non-traditional manner. The arguments for this, such as his work on vocabulary in dating the Priestly (P) and Holiness (H) sources is invaluable if nothing else as a model for how such an issue should be debated.

Obviously, five stars, and an unequivocally positive recommendation.

A brilliant, profound and absorbing commentary

Jacob Milgrom, a Conservative rabbi and modern Bible scholar, is a, if not the, leading authority on Leviticus. Milgrom's painstakingly thorough commentary on the first sixteen chapters of Leviticus has revolutionized the modern understanding of the rituals and practices described in the book.
Drawing upon classical (and some obscure) Jewish interpreters, modern scholarship, and his own brilliant insights, Milgrom argues that Leviticus' seemingly dry recounting of rituals and practices expresses a profound theology of Israel, a theology based upon life and death, good and evil, with the G*d of Israel supreme. Milgrom argues that Leviticus banishes demons from its theology and posits man's choices as the cause of evil. Analogizing the sacrificial system to "The Portrait of Dorian Grey", Milgrom argues that sin creates impurity on the Tabernacle and the more serious the sin, the more severe the pollution. Pollution unchecked can drive the divine presence from the people's midst. Sacrifice (chiefly the hattat/purification offering) served to remove the impurity but only if the sinner was motivated by asham/guilt.
In addition to explaining the differing types of sacrifices, Milgrom also explains the dietary laws (kashrut) as a reflection of the priestly theology. To twist a phrase, taxonomy recapitulates theology. Milgrom argues that the dietary laws reflected and fostered a profound respect for life, both animal and human.
Milgrom also investigates in detail the purity laws regulating childbirth, menstruation, sex, certain diseases and similar physical causes of impurities. He argues that the laws governing physical impurities reflected the priestly life/death theology but that physical causes of impurity were understood differently than moral causes of impurity. The person affected by physical causes of impurity was in need of ritual purification and sometimes was required to bring sacrifices to purify the Tabernacle of impurities occasioned by severe physical impurities. In contrast, the sinner needed forgiveness and was always required to bring a sacrifice, accompanied by asham/guilt, to purify the Tabernacle of the impurity caused by sin.
Milgrom proceeds verse by verse and each chapter is followed by fascinating essays in which he sets out in a more orderly fashion his interpretation. His work is regularly cited by leading scholars but the work is accessible to non-experts, though it is not an "easy read" by any means. Be prepared to read and reread this work in order to grasp all that Milgrom is saying. Milgrom's interpretation opens up not only Leviticus but virtually every other page of the Bible to new interpretations.
Milgrom includes a huge bibliography and detailed indices. One complaint - the Anchor Bible series does not set out the Hebrew text so be prepared to try to decode the transliteration system employed by Milgrom.
I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to grapple with the meaning of Leviticus. Christian and Jews, modern scholars and lay persons all can benefit from reading and rereading Milgrom's penetrating analysis.

Freakin' Fool Proof!

So, I'm an educated guy. College degree and everything. I know the difference between a teaspoon and a tablespoon. I can read and follow directions. But my cooking has always been...well it's been: "at least it won't poison you"...and except for that one time that's held true. Who knew you had to cook the potatoes first when making potato and egg tacos? My friend's famous last words before disappearing into the bathroom "these potatoes are kinda raw, aren't they?"
Any-hoo, that's been my cooking experience up until now. NOW I have Hilah! I have her videos and her wonderful cook book! I got it 3 days ago and did what she recommended. I read it like a book. I now know how to shop! And that has always been an issue with me. How do I know which is the best garlic head? How do I store said garlic along with onions and herbs and all that stuff? Now I know!
After reading and then picking out a few recipes for the week (again, as she recommends)I have so far made the chili and the peanut noodles AND THEY CAME OUT FREAKIN' FANTASTIC! There will be no more southern backhanded compliment "oh, at least he tried. Bless his heart." These dishes are good! Really good!! It is now worth cleaning the dishes to have a delicious, fresh meal. It's now worth spending a little time when coming home from work to make something in which I know exactly what went in and how it was prepared. Worth the time to have a bit of left over for lunch the next day. This book is fun, informative and easy to follow. Thanks Hilah!!

Fun and comprehensive, anyone can learn to cook!

I am a pretty good cook if I don't say so myself. I was running out of ideas, and happened upon Hilah's cooking channel online last summer. Since then, I have made at least 50 of her recipes. She has a way of making everything seem so simple and easy, and, as my husband said after another great meal, "Hilah never steers you wrong."

The cookbook is comprehensive and what I like the most about Hilah and her cooking methods is that she doesn't think you need to buy a bunch of fancy equipment or ingredients to make great food! She keeps things basic and fresh, while avoiding canned and packaged foods. She is health minded without being over-the-top about it. This book breaks down the basics on everything from equipment to spices, food preparation techniques to a great vocabulary of cooking. I wish I'd had this book when I first moved out of the house and my nieces and nephews will be getting this book for graduation! -Nicoleincos

Fantastic and fun book -- for beginners and experts alike!

I received this book as a birthday gift because I asked for it after falling in love with Hilah via her YouTube channel. She's fun, funny, and has a fantastic personality and presence... and she's darn good at cooking.

First of all, as a vegetarian, it was important to me that there were recipes in here that I would use. And boy, are there ever! Her recipes are cleverly organized by meals and such. There are sections for breakfast (both work-day and weekend), brunch, lunch, salads, sandwiches, hot lunches, dinners (including one section called "Summer Time Suppers"), tacos, pasta "& friends", desserts, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and even a few pages devoted to an entire vegetarian dinner, with several courses! But that's not the only thing I can eat in here. There are TONS of vegetarian options, and options for almost anyone's preferences.

On top of all the recipes, one of the coolest things about this book is all the helpful information. A lot of it is really basic, meaning this book is great for beginners, but having so many recipes and so many tables and charts and definitions all in one book really makes this cookbook a fantastic idea for folks who already think they know all there is to know.

In the first section alone, Hilah teaches you how to make a grocery list, how to go grocery shopping, how to read a recipe, and more. There's a 9 page section of terms and definitions commonly found in recipes. There's a whole section on equipment, and a giant chart about spices: what the spice is called, what it tastes like, what it is commonly used in, what it can be substituted with, and a fun fact about it! And the back of the book is also filled with immensely informative stuff like abbreviations, conversions, and a troubleshooting guide on how to fix common problems you may face in the kitchen.

On top of all this, the way Hilah writes is conversational and friendly, so not only is this an incredibly helpful and informative cookbook, but it also makes cooking really, really fun.

As I said before, the fact that all of this information is put into one book means that this is a great thing to have for cooks and bakers and folks at all levels of the kitchen skills spectrum. It's a really comprehensive guide to cooking without being at all overwhelming. I love it!
