An entertaining read, with unexpected wisdoms within.

A great read. This book details Shaun's rise to the top of the Miami nightlife scene, but its lessons are applicable to any field you may choose to pursue. Through his anecdotes as well as quotes from Napoleon, P.T. Barnum, and others Shaun details his craft while giving more broadly applicable teachings. I bought this book for an entertaining read, and It that, but I also found many wisdoms that I didn't expect to find within its pages. If you want an entertaining read buy this book, if you're needing a little motivation, or just want more in your professional endevors, buy this book. It is a very rewarding and entertaining read.

Aimed at the Oberver, Not the Theoretical Aspects

This book is aimed at the advanced undergraduate or graduate student in astronomy or astrophysics. It is well suited for use as a university text, probably for a one year course. It also includes enough matherial to be useful to research scientists who may have specialized in other areas. The orientation of the book is more to the observer and analyzer of steller atmospheres rather than the theoretical approach.

In my opinion the student should have enough of a background in astronomy to at least understand the concept of spectrum lines. And math through Fourier transforms -- Chapter two of this book covers Fourier transforms, but twenty-five pages isn't quite enough to provide the understanding that I believe is needed for the rest of the book, or indeed for the questions that end Chapter 2.

This is the third edition of the book. It is updated to include the recent discoveries in both observations and the analytical tools that have been developed. To a lessor extent, some areas of the book have been revised to follow suggestions made by users of the previous editions.

Quentin Phillipps is a native of Borneo who has been fascinated by its wildlife and natural history since he was a child. Karen Phillipps is a native of Borneo who has illustrated many books on Asian wildlife, including A Field Guide to the Mammals of Borneo. They are the coauthors of the acclaimed Phillipps' Field Guide to the Birds of Borneo (Princeton).

We got this book just before our trip to Borneo. Was an excellent primer on what to expect in terms of mammal life and the local ecology; super illustrations as well as information abut actual habitat. Glad we got it.

Comprehensive coverage of Borneo's mammals

Following Phillipps’ very successful Field Guide to Birds of Borneo, now in its third edition (link below), there now comes the Mammals of Borneo. This field guide follows the format of the Birds of Borneo with the art work coming from Karen Phillipps, much of it from her previous work on A Field Guide to the Mammals of Borneo (2007). That said many new plates and illustrations have been done for this new guide. Much like the Birds of Borneo the Mammals of Borneo covers in depth a wealth of knowledge on the ecology, climate, plants, prehistory and more. Another feature carried over from the Birds of Borneo are the yellow boxes with interesting facts, historical notes and more making for some interesting reading. Interspersed throughout the guide are many photographs to compliment the artwork which not only illustrates the mammals but often favored plants, habitat or behavioral aspects. Yet another feature carried over from the Birds of Borneo and added to this guide, with more mammal emphasis, are thirty plus plates and features on where to see mammals in Sabah, Brunei, Sarawak and Kalimantan. This is a very complete field guide and a must for anyone visiting the island of Borneo.

Aesthetics and functionality have been combined in this beautifully presented field guide.
While the layout is definitely a departure from the more typical ‘plate-style’ format, this book includes all of the information one would expect from a hard-working ‘field-purpose’ guide, but also includes enough factual tid bits, notes and discussions to be an enjoyable stand alone read.

While remaining compact in size (though slightly on the heavy side in weight), the book covers all of Borneo’s 247 terrestrial mammals and 30 of the island’s marine mammals. Dedicated sections to each species are spacious, providing field-specific information such as ID/Appearance, sexes, calls and range as well as other relevant field identifiers…such as ‘scent’ (in the case of the Sunda Skunk). Where relevant, additional notes and information on colouration have been included too, for example the various colour morphs of the Red and Silvered Langurs, or the species that exhibit distraction (Deimatic) markings or displays.

What I also liked about this guide is the additional tid bits, just enough to work as a casual read but no so much to have cluttered the text. These little factual extras are cleanly presented in pale yellow boxes within each species section. The text ranges from a few sentences, facts or notes on taxanomy - to in-depth discussions regarding history or conservation…for example “Can the Mahakam River Dolphin be Saved from Extinction?” or “Cassowaries and Elephants: What do they have in common?”

The front and back pages are absolutely laden with additional information to aid the wildlife-seeking visitor, including sections and maps for the areas of specific wildlife interest, a checklist of the 63 endemic species and where to see them, as well as entire introductory sections dedicated to Borneo’s climate and forest ecology.

As a professional naturalist who has worked in the jungles and rainforests of Asia (specifically Sri Lanka), my main requirement for any field guide is that it works in the field as a portable ‘quick-reference’ that would enable me to identify a species, and I believe this guide would. While I have yet to visit Borneo, when I do, this book will accompany me on any field outing.

I definitely would recommend this field guide to anyone wanting to visit Borneo to encounter its wildlife, whether field professional or enthusiast. The text is both authoritative and yet accessible, designed to appeal to a wide range of audiences and I believe it has achieved that. All in all, the guide’s stunning painted illustrations and photographs, coupled with its impressive amount of information, more than whet the appetite to visit Borneo and see it for oneself… after-all legendary naturalist Sir David Attenborough cites this hub of biodiversity as his favourite place on earth.

About the Author
Dr. Carl S. Warren is Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Georgia, Athens. Dr. Warren has taught classes at the University of Georgia, University of Iowa, Michigan State University, and University of Chicago. He focused his teaching efforts on principles of accounting and auditing. Dr. Warren received his PhD from Michigan State University and his BBA and MA from the University of Iowa. During his career, Dr. Warren published numerous articles in professional journals, including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Accountancy, The CPA Journal, and Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory. Dr. Warren has served on numerous committees of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Institute of Internal Auditors. He also has consulted with numerous companies and public accounting firms. His outside interests include handball, golf, skiing, backpacking, and fly-fishing.

Ph.D.,Oklahoma State University

Dr. Jonathan Duchac is the Wayne Calloway Professor of Accounting and Acting Associate Dean of Accounting Programs at Wake Forest University. He earned his PhD in accounting from the University of Georgia and currently teaches introductory and advanced courses in financial accounting. Dr. Duchac has received a number of awards during his career, including the Wake Forest University Outstanding Graduate Professor Award, the T.B. Rose award for Instructional Innovation, and the University of Georgia Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Duchac has served as Accounting Advisor to Merrill Lynch Equity Research, where he worked with research analysts in reviewing and evaluating the financial reporting practices of public companies. He has testified before the U.S. House of Representatives, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and the Securities and Exchange Commission and has worked with a number of major public companies on financial reporting and accounting policy issues. In addition to his professional interests, Dr. Duchac is an avid mountain biker and snow skier.

About the Author
Tina Louise Spalding began channeling Jesus during the summer of 2013, when he appeared in her book Great Minds Speak to You. It proved to be a great challenge not only to accept the assignment he offered her -- writing this autobiography -- but to also face many of the fears that this unusual experience brought up. Telling it how it is... or was

I had been having questions about the life of Jesus, and I ran into some videos of Tina Louise Spalding. She channels Jesus and many of the things she talked about seemed much more true than what I had been thought in church and from family and friends. I follow the teachings of Buddha and I believe in something like Cosmic Intelligence, or the Laws of the Universe, but since I have been raised Roman Catholic, I always run into one or two issues that deal with the Catholic faith. The book definitively deals with Jesus' life, appropriately starting before conception, and past his crucifixion. But he doesn't just stop telling us the story of his life. He also takes the opportunity to impart his teachings, not the RC church's teachings, as well as explaining the laws of the Universe.

This book is best understood if you are familiar with New Age terms like law of attraction, past life, incarnation, channeling, abundance, etc. Also, Jesus touches controversial topics like death, sexuality, abortion, drugs, Mary Magdalene, immaculate conception, etc. This is not a mainstream read or biblical study material, instead it is a rebel yell to make you wake up! A very good book indeed.

This book was amazing. Thank you Tina Spalding for being brave enough to share this information. I was so curious and knew there was so much more to the life of Jesus. This book contained many of the answers I was in search of and provided answers to questions I did not even think to ask. If you are curious about the life of Jesus this book has the answers. I recommend it to anyone in search of the truth.

It's so refreshing to finally get more of the truth. After having read the Bible cover to cover multiple times, I've noticed that there is so much conflicting information. I had so many questions about what Jesus' real purpose was on Earth, and this book answered many of them.

About the Author
Andy Stern is a senior fellow at Columbia University's Richard Paul Richman Center for Business, Law, and Public Policy. He was formerly president of the 2.2 millionmember SEIU, the union of hospital; health-care; nursing-home; food-service; home-care workers; janitors; and public employees. SEIU played a major role in getting Barack Obama elected President of the United States in 2008, and it also is credited with being the driving force behind securing passage of the 2010 Affordable Care Act. Stern was one of five Presidential appointees to the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (Simpson-Bowles), where he authored a minority report on deficit reduction and promoting economic growth. He has served on numerous boards, including those of the Aspen Institute, Broad Foundation, Council on Competitiveness, Economic Policy Institute, Council on Foreign Relations Trade Task Force, Kaiser Coalition, Open Society Foundations, and Leadership Conference on Civil Rights."

Stern has given us a groundbreaking analysis of the catastrophic disappearance of work in America and a radical solution

Andy Stern, former President of the Service Employees International Union, has always been a visionary. When I worked as a consultant to SEIU in the early years of the millenium, he asked our interdisciplinary team of change agents to help him re-envision the way a union Local operates, to help empower leaders and to shift from defense to offense, to view their mission as broader and bolder than collective bargaining. He was looking for a paradigm change because he could see that the union movement was shrinking and would be even more imperiled in the future. He anticipated future trends and was open to radical new ideas. He even led his union OUT of the AFL-CIO because of it. He takes this sensibility into his new book, Raising the Floor. The argument he makes is simple but compelling. With the rapid explosion of technological progress and the digitalization of work, we are faced in the near future the possibility that upwards to 47% of current jobs will be eliminated. He discusses at length the uncoupling of wages and jobs from economic growth (stagnant wages and the "jobless recovery"), the meteoric rise of so-called contingent work (freelance, temp, 1099, piecework, entrepreneurial, etc.) to currently constitute 34% of today's workforce, and the race to the bottom for American workers as a result of globalization as even college graduates nowadays are no longer able to expect a "wage premium" by virtue of their degree. Automation is taking away jobs or components of jobs of the skilled as well as the unskilled, the college grad as well as the high school dropout.. The trend is gaining speed so that we are at an "inflection point" of seeing a progressive and catastrophic loss of jobs, the demeaning of work, and the descent of millions of Americans into economic insecurity and frank poverty. Traditional liberal solutions like a stronger safety net and/or raising the minimum wage are insufficient holding actions. He argues for a Universal Basic Income--a cash payment to each and every American regardless of what they do -- or don't do-for it as the only thing that makes sense in a world in which the traditional employer-based job is disappearing and freelance contingent work is becoming the (unreliable) norm. He spells out how it would work and begins to sketch out how to get it enacted. It appeals to conservatives because it gets rid of welfare as we know it (read the book for details) and liberals because it goes a long way to ending poverty. It also points toward a new American Dream in which, because one has basic economic security needs met, one can pursue ones dreams and passions in both private and public life, more freely.
Stern has done us a big favor with this book. I never really bought into the "automation will be the death of us" line until reading Stern's arguments and evidence carefully. Now I believe it. And I didn't really ever understand the mechanics of a Universal Basic Income, thinking it bizarrely unreasonable and political kryptonite until reading Stern's analysis how its appeal to the Right as well as the Left. Now I think it' should be at the top of our progressive agenda. Kudos to Stern and this terrific, readable, persuasive book!

An important book on an important topic. You are going to debate UBI -- and you will be smarter if you read this book first.

This is a good book by a great man on a very important topic.

Your children will study Andy Stern as the most important labor leader in the 20th century. Cesar Chavez got the postage stamp, but Andy built a far bigger, stronger, and better labor union. He was not afraid to make enemies in doing this -- and he has acquired more than a few here in Southern California. This is the book that anyone who knows him would expect him to write on universal basic income: methodical, impassioned, with a clear point of view.

1. If you know the debate, you can just read Chapter 8, which is worth the price of the book. The first 2/3 of the book is prelude to this -- not a great structure. Andy probably made his kids wait for dessert, although in this case, chewing through seven chapters of broccoli is worth it.

2. Tasty though the veggies are, the prelude makes arguments that are not vital to the solution. Will technology create more jobs or wipe out more? Is employment becoming more fractured and contingent? Does college matter or not? There are intelligent people who support UBI on both sides of these debates. You may have a view, but you don't need one to engage in the UBI discussion, which attracts adherents and detractors left and right, optimist and pessimist, globalist and nationalist, labor market traditionalists and radicals, etc.

3. The book makes a stronger case for basic income than for universal basic income. Why, precisely, should the children of Bill Gates get $1,000 per month from taxpayers? "Because it is too complicated to do it any other way" is not a super convincing answer.

4. As you might expect, Andy is at his best campaigning for bold new ideas. He runs a close second best when making the moral case for his policy. Third would be economics, which he uses instrumentally: a crutch not a flashlight. Fourth, by quite a bit, is technology, where he is easily gobsmacked (not always without reason, but always uncritically).

5. Like many public figures who have taken a deeply personal beating or ten, he really cannot write about himself, which is too bad. He has had a consequential and interesting life, played a key role in shaping Obamacare, built SEIU into America's biggest union, depending on how you keep score, and had the huevos to break with his mentor and split the AFL-CIO for good reason. Will unions take up the cause of UBI? Will Democrats? How does someone go from the Simpson Bowles commission on entitlement reform, to proposing a multi-trillion dollar entitlement? WTF was the point of the fight with UNITE?

The Universal Basic Income time is coming

Andy Stern first reviews the personal and professional journey that has led him to this point, as a labor leader and more recently an investigator of the effect of modern technology on the American work force. The chart on page 30 really tells it all: The wages of the median American household has been FLAT since the mid 1970s while productivity has climbed! Chapter by chilling chapter, he details the trends. People no longer can depend on regular jobs, they work as freelancers, but here they compete with people from foreign countries who (with much lower costs of living) can charge much less. A college education no longer means a useful career, more and more of our children cannot pay back college loans. Automation will wipe out most jobs within decades. Currently popular politicians - Trump, Sanders, are popular simply because people know that they are getting poorer while only the top few per cent are getting richer. He proposes a Universal Basic Income (UBI) of about $1000 per month for each adult, total cost of $2.7 trillion. This would be partly paid for by replacing every existing antipoverty program (food stamps, etc.), for a total of $1 trillion. He says that the solutions currently proposed, e.g., minimum wages, college support, will be helpful only in the short term; in the long run, only a UBI will work as a structural solution to the problem of the lack of work for the average person in the digital age.
